J. Carlyle Ellett Award
The J.
Carlyle Ellett Award is presented annually to
an outstanding
senior economics major. The award is based on academic performance,
contributions
to department and university life, and potential use of the economics
major
following graduation from Furman. The award is named for Dr.
Joseph Carlyle Ellett, who was a professor of economics at Furman from
1939 until his retirement in 1977.

Arthur
Magill Award
The Arthur Magill Award is presented
annually to a
rising junior economics
major showing outstanding academic potential and intellectual promise.
This award is funded in part by the Piedmont Economics Club in memory
of Arthur Magill, the club's founder who maintained a lifelong interest
in the field of economics. The Piedmont Economics Club is South
Carolina's oldest civic organization dedicated to the promotion and
discussion of economic ideas and thought. Meeting regularly at the
Poinsett Club in Greenville, South Carolina, the Piedmont Economics
Club brings as speakers leading economists, financial analysts,
journalists, and government policymakers. In addition to promoting
economic thought and discussion among its members, the club seeks to
enrich the teaching of economics at area universities.

Wall Street Journal Award
The Wall Street
Journal Student Achievement Award is presented annually by the
Department of Economics in conjunction with the Department of Business
and Accounting. For nearly 60 years, this distinguished
program has given colleges and universities from around the country an
exclusive opportunity to recognize the performance of their most
outstanding economics and business students. Students are nominated by
their schools, and are recognized among other things for academic
achievement, leadership potential and/or entrepreneurial spirit.
The winner receives an individualized paperweight, a year's
subscription to the Wall Street Journal, and his/her name on the
department plaque, which is exhibited in Hipp Hall outside of the
department suite.
The
Adam Smith Prize, established and
funded by the economics faculty, is awarded to the best paper in
economics in the
annual essay contest conducted by the department.
