We were saddened to learn that Ray C. Roberts, Jr., Symmes
Professor of Economics Emeritus, died on May 5, in Hamilton,
Virginia. During
his time at Furman, Ray served as the Chair of the Department
of Economics and Business Administration and Interim Dean and
Vice
President for Academic Affairs. We are grateful to have known
him as a colleague, leader, and friend, and we will miss him.
Dr. Roberts served as Chairman of the Department of Economics
and Business Administration three times, 1969-73, 1985-88,
and 1993-94. He also served as Acting Vice President for Academic
Affairs and Dean 1994-95.
Dr. Roberts attended Jackson High School, Jackson, Alabama,
and received the AB degree from Duke University and the MS
and
PhD degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel
Hill. He retired from Furman University in 1995. Formerly he
taught at Winthrop College, Old Dominion University, Duke University
(as a visiting faculty member),
and the University of North Carolina (while in graduate school).
He served on active duty in the United States Marine Corps
during the Korean War and retired with the rank of Colonel,
USMCR. He was a member of Buncombe Street United Methodist
Church
serving on the Board of Trustees and other committees.
