Economics Students to Attend the Piedmont Economic Club

Thanks to the generosity of the Canal Insurance Company and the Piedmont Economic Club, five Furman students will accompany a Furman economics professor to the February 8 meeting of the Piedmont Economic Club to hear Marie Harris, an economist with UBS Investment Research, speak.

The Piedmont Economic Club meets regularly at the Poinsett Club in Greenville, South Carolina, for dinner and to hear a speaker address some economic issue, trend, or policy.  Typical attendees include bankers, commercial realtors, investments specialists, insurance executives, and economists from the Upstate.

Mr. Harris' bio appears below:

Mr. Harris is a managing director and chief economist for the Americas for UBS Investment Research. He has been named to the Institutional Investor All-America Research Team on 14 separate occasions. In 2004 he ranked first in the economics category for the Fixed Income group and second in the Equity Research group.  Prior to the UBS AG acquisition of PaineWebber Incorporated, Mr. Harris was the chief economist for PaineWebber. Before that he worked for the Federal Reserve Bank of New York and The Bank for International Settlements.  Mr. Harris holds a PhD in economics from Columbia University, an MA in economics from Columbia University, and a BA in economics from University of Texas.
